Why replace the original mount

GPS bike computers come with an elastic mount that fits onto the handlebars. It works, but it puts the screen in line with the handlebars, where you have to lower your head to read it, and it takes up space that is already in demand. An out-front mount solves both problems and also lets you hang a light or camera beneath the computer.

The first thing to check: your bike computer’s brand

The interfaces quarter-turn are not universal. Garmin, Wahoo and Bryton each have their own, and a Garmin mount will not take a Wahoo computer as it stands. There are two options: choose a mount for your brand or use an adapter (KOM Cycling, Wahoo). Many K-Edge and KOM mounts are also sold with interchangeable inserts, letting you change computers without changing mounts.

Where to mount it

  • On the handlebars, positioned out front : the most common setup. Check the diameter — 31.8 mm in almost every case.
  • On the stem or headset top cap : more compact, ideal when the handlebars are crowded.
  • On an integrated cockpit : this is where it gets tricky. A one-piece handlebar-and-stem cockpit has a proprietary profile, so you need a mount designed for it — K-Edge makes them for several models, while Deda and Enve make them for their own.
  • On time-trial extensions : dedicated mounts between the extensions.

The computer-and-camera combination

Mounts with a GoPro interface underneath the base let you fit a camera or light beneath the computer, using the same mounting point. It is the neatest, most stable setup and leaves the handlebars completely clear. A GoPro adapter is available for most branded lights.

Aluminium or composite

Themachined aluminium (K-Edge) is stiffer and more durable: the computer does not rattle in its mount, which matters on cobbles and trails. The composite is lighter and costs less. Either way, be wary of models without a safety screw if you ride on rough terrain.

Wear parts

The mounting points plastic parts of the mount wear down and eventually develop play. You can replace them individually for a few pounds rather than replacing the whole mount. They are the parts to order when your computer starts to move.
