MTB shifters

How to choose your MTB shifter

The shifter controls indexing: it determines the number of clicks and the amount of cable pulled. Shimano and SRAM cover 9, 10, 11 and 12 speeds, in both mechanical and wireless versions.

How many speeds, which brand?

• The shifter must be indexed for exactly the same number of sprockets as your derailleur and cassette.
• Shimano and SRAM have different cable pull ratios : the two brands cannot be mixed in the same drivetrain.
• With Shimano, the range LinkGlide is a separate family, designed for e-MTBs and more durable.
• A replacement shifter should be chosen according to the exact reference, not just the number of speeds.

Right, left or pair?

• In single chainring, only the right-hand shifter is required.
• The left-hand shifter operates the front derailleur, or sometimes a dropper seatpost.
• Check the side before ordering: the references are different.

Which handlebar mount?

• Separate clamp : universal, fits any 22.2 mm handlebar.
• I-Spec (Shimano) or Matchmaker (SRAM) : the shifter mounts to the brake lever, freeing up handlebar space.
• Beware of generations: I-Spec II, B and EV are not interchangeable.

Mechanical or electronic?

Mechanical remains the default choice: reliable, repairable and battery-free. Electronic shifting (SRAM AXS POD, Shimano Di2) eliminates the cable and housing, provides consistent shifts under load and can be reprogrammed, but costs more and requires charging.
