MTB disc brake levers

How to choose an MTB disc brake lever

The lever is the most exposed part in a crash: a cracked master cylinder or bent lever blade can be replaced without changing the entire brake. Shimano, Magura, SRAM and Formula are represented.

Which lever for my caliper?

• The lever must belong to the same hydraulic family as the caliper: piston ratios are not interchangeable between brands.
• Observe the fluid in the system: mineral oil for Shimano and Magura, DOT fluid for SRAM.
• A 2-piston lever paired with a 4-piston caliper from the same brand rarely works optimally: stick to the intended combination.

Which adjustments should you check?

• Reach adjustment : via a dial on recent models, or an Allen key on entry-level ranges.
• Bite point adjustment : reserved for high-end models, it adjusts the point at which the pad bites.
• Grip : length, shape and texture make a noticeable difference to comfort on long descents.

Which mounting clamp?

The clamps I-Spec (Shimano), Matchmaker / MMX (SRAM) and equivalents allow the shifter and dropper post remote to be mounted directly to the brake lever. A clearer handlebar and improved ergonomics — check the clamp generation, as it varies between ranges.
