Electric bike pumps

Effortless inflation to the exact pressure

An electric pump fits in your hand, recharges via USB-C and inflates on its own: set the pressure you want, connect it, and the pump stops automatically when it gets there. This category has advanced more than most in recent years, solving two real problems — inflation accuracy and effort.

What it really offers

• Pressure accurate to a tenth of a bar, reached without ever looking at a pressure gauge and repeatable from one ride to the next. That’s crucial for gravel and mountain biking, where 0.2 bar changes how a tyre performs.
• No effort : a considerable advantage for anyone with limited hand strength, and with road tyres that take a lot of force to inflate beyond 6 bar.
• Automatic shut-off : no more accidentally overinflated tyres.
• Many models also inflate balls, air mattresses and car tyres, with the adapters supplied.

Limitations to bear in mind

An electric pump weighs more than a mechanical mini pump, and you need to remember to charge it — a pump with a flat battery is no use at the roadside, whereas a mechanical mini pump always works. Battery life is measured in tyres inflated per charge, and falls with larger-volume tyres and higher pressures. Many cyclists therefore keep their electric pump for the garage and car boot, and take a CO2 cartridge on rides.

How to choose between them

• The maximum pressure : some compact models top out at around 7–8 bar, enough for mountain biking and gravel riding but marginal for a narrow road tyre.
• The airflow rate, which determines how long it takes to inflate a large tyre — this is where pocket-sized models show their limitations.
• The noise and heat : these pumps get hot, and the best ones manage the heat without stopping mid-inflation.
• The adapters supplied and whether it has a hose, which avoids putting strain on the valve.
