How to choose your GPS bike computer

A GPS bike computer does three jobs: it measures your ride, it guides, and it brings together data from your sensors. Whether the price difference is worth it depends on which matters to you.

First decision: mapping

  • Without maps : the device records and displays your data and can follow a route using a directional arrow. Enough if you ride familiar routes. Entry-level Bryton Rider models, Sigma Rox 4.0, Coospo.
  • With mapping : a proper on-screen map, with route planning and recalculation if you go off course. Essential for touring, gravel riding and exploring. Garmin Edge from the 540 upwards, Wahoo Elemnt Roam and Bolt, Hammerhead Karoo.
  • An exception : the Beeline Velo, which does away with a data screen in favour of minimalist arrow-based navigation. A choice geared towards city riding and leisurely rides.

Screen size and battery life

This is the real trade-off between models. A 2.6-inch screen shows a readable map and plenty of data fields; a 2.2-inch screen is less conspicuous and lighter. For battery life, expect 12 to 20 hours on compact models and up to 45 hours on larger models — more on the Solar from Garmin, which charge as you ride. For ultra-distance riding and bikepacking, this is the number-one criterion.

Sensors

All these devices receive data from ANT+ and Bluetooth : heart-rate strap, cadence sensor, speed sensor, power meter, rear radar, smart turbo trainer. The Bundle or Pack include some of these sensors and cost considerably less than buying them separately — just check you don't already have equivalents.

The ecosystem you rarely leave

Each brand has its own app and way of doing things: Garmin Connect, Wahoo, Bryton Active, Hammerhead. All sync with Strava and popular training platforms, but your history and the ease of everyday use remain tied to the original app. It's a choice you'll live with for years.

A mount isn't always included

Most bike computers come with a rubber-strap mount for the handlebars or stem. For a neat, aero setup, you need an out-front mount — sold separately in the dedicated accessories section. Garmin and Wahoo quarter-turn interfaces aren't identical, but adapters are available.
