MTB chains and quick links

How to choose a mountain bike chain

Mud, dust and high torque with a single chainring: mountain bike chains wear quickly and take the cassette with them if replacement is delayed. Shimano, SRAM and KMC cover 10- to 12-speed systems, in standard, reinforced or anti-corrosion-treated versions.

Which chain for my drivetrain?

• The number of speeds determines the choice: a 12-speed chain is narrower and cannot replace an 11-speed chain.
• For 12-speed systems, stick with the same brand of your drivetrain: Shimano Hyperglide+ and SRAM Eagle profiles are not officially interchangeable.
• In 10- and 11-speed systems, brands are largely compatible with one another.
• For e-MTBs, choose a reinforced chain designed for motor torque.

How many links?

• Measure the length with the chain on the largest sprocket, with the suspension compressed if your frame requires it.
• A chain that is too short can rip off the derailleur the first time you shift onto the largest sprocket.
• Keep the removed links: they can help out in the event of a breakage.

Which quick link, and when should it be replaced?

• The quick link must match the number of speeds of the chain.
• Some quick links are designed for single use: fit a new one each time you reinstall the chain, and carry a spare in your bag.
• Check wear with a gauge and replace at around 0,5 % of elongation.
