Road cycling – the history of cycling

Road cycling, also known as road racing, is the oldest form of cycle sport. While mountain biking and BMX date from the second half of the 20th century, road cycling as we know it today emerged in the late 19th century, alongside legendary races that are still on the professional calendar. From steel to carbon frames, wool jerseys to Lycra cycling shorts, fixed gears to 11-speed cassettes, and frame-mounted shifters to electronic shifting… the road bike is no longer just a means of transport. Its equipment has evolved over the years to deliver ever greater performance and ergonomics at a lower weight.

ROAD CYCLING – A WIDE RANGE OF EQUIPMENT

Road cycling takes many forms: criteriums, long-distance rides, touring, sportives and cycle tourism. Whether you’re racing or touring, you need the right equipment to spend hours in the saddle comfortably. Probikeshop has a wide range of components, clothing and accessories for road cycling, from road bike chainsets, rim-brake wheels and disc-brake wheels to road handlebars, saddles and GPS cycling computers.

A more recent addition to the market, power meters help riders measure their power output and, in turn, their performance more accurately.

Of course, cyclists’ kit has also changed considerably, from road cycling helmets and cycling shoes, to cycling jerseys, jackets and other technical clothing.
