Road cycling – The history of cycling

Road cycling, also known as road racing, is the oldest form of cycling sport. While mountain biking and BMX date from the second half of the 20th century, road cycling as we know it today emerged in the late 19th century, alongside legendary races that remain on the professional calendar. From steel frames to carbon frames, wool jerseys to Lycra cycling shorts, fixed gears to 11-speed cassettes, and frame-mounted shifters to electronic drivetrains… the road bike is no longer simply a means of transport. Its equipment has evolved over the decades to deliver ever greater performance and ergonomics while reducing weight.
