E-MTB tools

Which tools do you need to work on an e-MTB?

Most e-MTB maintenance can be done with ordinary bike tools. Two jobs are exceptions, because the motor takes the place of the bottom bracket and electrical cables run through the bike.

Removing the bottom bracket around the motor

  • TL-FC33 : bottom bracket removal tool designed for Shimano STEPS motors.
  • TL-FC39 : specifically for FC-E8000 and FC-E8050 cranksets.
  • TL-FC32 and TL-FC36 : standard Hollowtech II external bottom bracket tools, also used on non-electric mountain bikes.
  • These spline patterns are not interchangeable: forcing the wrong tool onto a cup rounds it off, and the job becomes one for the workshop.

The electrical wiring

The tool TL-EW02 is used to connect and disconnect the cables E-Tube and Di2. It applies to the bike’s entire electrical system — display, remote control and speed sensor — as well as electronic shifting. E-Tube connectors snap firmly into place: without the tool, you’re more likely to break the locking tab than release it.

Where standard tools still do the job

Chain, cassette, bearings, suspension, brake bleeding: none of these is specific to an e-MTB. The bike is simply heavier to handle, and a workstand rated for at least 25 kg avoids nasty surprises when you lift it.
