Gravel riding calls for two-bolt cleats

This is what sets this category apart, without exception: all gravel pedals use a 2-bolt cleat of the MTB type — SPD, Eggbeater, ATAC, X-Track. No 3-bolt road pedals here, and that's no oversight.

Why two bolts

  • The cleat is small and recessed in the sole: you can walk normally, which matters when you need to push the bike, tackle a section on foot or stop on a trail.
  • The mechanism sheds mud rather than clogging it.
  • Most of these pedals are double-sided : you can clip in without looking, even when accelerating up a steep climb.
  • The trade-off is a smaller contact area than with road pedals. On very long rides, a stiff sole more than makes up for it.

The four systems

  • Shimano SPD : the most widespread, with replacement cleats that are easiest to find and adjustable spring tension via the spring. From the M520 to the XTR M9100.
  • Crankbrothers Eggbeater and Candy : four-sided entry and an open mechanism that rarely clogs. The Eggbeater is minimalist; the Candy adds a support platform.
  • Time ATAC : plenty of float and easy engagement, with a reputation for working well in mud.
  • Look X-Track : compatible with SPD cleats, a direct alternative to Shimano.

Platform or no platform

Pedals with a cage or with a platform (Shimano XT M8120, Crankbrothers Candy, Shimano ME700) offer a wider, more stable contact area, useful with a flexible sole or on very rough terrain. Minimalist models (Eggbeater, XTR M9100) prioritise low weight and mud clearance.

Dual-purpose pedals

A few models (Shimano M324, ED500, EH500) offer a clip-in side and a flat side. They're for bikes used two ways — gravel rides at weekends, commuting in everyday shoes during the week. A fair compromise, though heavier and less effective at either task.

What to check

Provided your shoes have two-bolt mounting holes — as gravel and MTB shoes do, but dedicated road shoes never do. Pedals come with a pair of cleats; consider a spare pair, as they wear quickly when you walk in them. Some models are available with short or long axle to adjust foot spacing.
