Mountain bikes – Bikes that can go anywhere

VTT is the French abbreviation for an all-terrain bike!

Adapted from the English term mountain bike (MTB), the mountain bike is an American invention from the 1970s, designed for use on rough terrain. Although some people had ventured off the beaten track on their bicycles much earlier, this was when the first bikes specifically designed for off-road riding appeared. John Breeze is now widely regarded as the driving force behind this revolution.

Mountain biking: a sport with something for everyone

Over time, mountain biking has grown rapidly in popularity and diversified considerably. Today it encompasses related but varied disciplines such as cross-country, enduro, downhill, freeride and all-mountain.

Cross-country mountain biking, for example, is an Olympic discipline in which riders race around a circuit of roughly 40 kilometres as quickly as possible. Strength, endurance and technical skill are needed to win these events.

Enduro focuses on downhill courses, but riders also have to tackle climbs. Enduro mountain bikes are therefore lighter than downhill bikes. They have mountain bike forks with up to 170 mm of travel to help riders absorb bumps and obstacles. Downhill mountain biking, as the name suggests, takes place on descents, often in the mountains. Riders use full-suspension mountain bikes equipped with mountain bike rear shocks, springs and forks suited to the discipline.

All these different types of mountain biking are represented at Probikeshop, giving our customers the widest possible choice and the confidence that they’ll find what they’re looking for at the best price!

Mountain biking is a technical sport in which equipment plays an important role. Buying spare parts and mountain bike components such as a mountain bike saddle, mountain bike pedals or a mountain bike stem... is often an excellent way to improve riding comfort, safety and performance.
