Mountain biking – Go anywhere on two wheels

VTT is the French abbreviation for mountain biking!

Derived from the English term ‘mountain bike’ (MTB), the VTT was invented in America in the 1970s for use on rough terrain. Although some people had ventured off the beaten track on their bicycles long before then, this was when the first bikes designed specifically for off-road riding appeared. John Breeze is now widely credited with pioneering this revolution.

Mountain biking: a sport with something for everyone

Over time, mountain biking has grown rapidly in popularity and diversified considerably. Today, it encompasses a range of related yet distinct disciplines, including cross-country, enduro, downhill, freeride and all-mountain.

Cross-country mountain biking, for example, is an Olympic discipline in which riders race around a course of roughly 40 kilometres as quickly as possible. Strength, endurance and technical skill are needed to win.

Enduro focuses on downhill sections, but riders also have to tackle climbs. Enduro mountain bikes are therefore lighter than downhill bikes. They have mountain bike forks with up to 170 mm of travel to help riders absorb obstacles on the trail. Downhill mountain biking, as the name suggests, takes place on descents, often in the mountains. Riders use full-suspension mountain bikes equipped with mountain bike rear shocks, springs and forks suited to the discipline.
